Lens Based Media: Research #3

Typography & Image

Ciara feat. Nicki Minaj - I'm Out

I was on Youtube doing some research and listening to music when I came across this lyric video. It is not the actual music video for the song but has graphic and typography designs to portray the lyrics in the song. I found that watching and reading the lyrics were more interesting because the images and typography related to the music. I also liked the colours and the type of font they used is very eye-catching and different. I decided to research some more Youtube videos similar to this.

Kanye West feat. T-Pain - The Good Life

I then watched this music video and watched how they relate the lyrics to the moving image or photograph. I like how the text interacts with the image in this video clip. I also like how the image is black and white and the text is a bold colour which helps the text stand out.

M.I.A - Boyz

I came across this video clip and I really liked the patterns used throughout the video. The designs look like they were kind of chucked together without any effort or thought, but they still make the video more interesting to watch because of how they relate to the people dancing and the colours.

These videos made me think more in depth about what type of text I will be using and how it is going to relate or interact with my self-portrait image on my poster. I have decided that I wanted to experiment with bright bold colours against a dark or plain background and then somehow relate it with my self-portrait image.

After watching the M.I.A video, I decided to go to the Creative Arts library and research some more. I coincidentally came across a book called "M.I.A". The book was based on the artist's documentation of her visual output and a number of collages, photos and prints from her early years in Arts School. I really enjoyed looking at the book because the graphic designs were different to any I have seen before, as if they were run through a bad computer connection and printed out as patterns. Even though some of the colours and patterns clash, I think that they still work well together. I also liked the way she added her self-portraits and collaged them with pattern, drawings and colour. I think I will experiment with some self-portaits of myself and try out adding patterns and colour etc.
